7 Tips to Stay Motivated

Updated: Jun 28, 2024

The motivation that you have for the gym is built as a mix of what drives you from the inside and what pushes you from the outside. You've got your internal mojo, like actually enjoying the workout or feeling awesome when you hit those personal goals. Then there's the external stuff, like getting praise or rewards or just not wanting to deal with the downsides of not working out.

Think about it this way: our brains are wired to actually like exercising for a few reasons. There's this theory that says we need three things for that workout spark: feeling like we're in control of what we're doing (autonomy), believing we're getting better at it (competence), and having people around us for support (relatedness). When all these things come together, our brain gives us the motivation.

When you're lifting the weights or sweating it out on the treadmill, your body's actually enjoying it. Chemicals like endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin show up and make you feel amazing. When you keep at it, your body gets stronger and fitter, which gives you even more reasons to keep crushing it at the gym. It's this whole mind-body connection that keeps the gym motivation going.

If you're struggling to stay motivated and trying to find ways to get that extra push, here are my 7 tips for you to try:

  1. Show Up Missing a gym day isn't the end of the world, but it can disrupt your programme if it becomes a habit. Consistency matters, so even if you're not in the mood, just showing up makes a difference.

  2. Find Inspiration Whether it's an athlete you admire or a personal goal like keeping up with your kids, having someone or something that inspires you boosts motivation.

  3. Gear Up Updating your workout gear, can boost motivation. New trainers, smart watch or just a t-shirt, looking good, makes you feel good. Replacing the old baggy t-shirt can make you feel more confident. Treat yourself!

  4. Only Do What You Enjoy Skip the exercises you dislike and focus on what you enjoy. That's the key to staying consistent and enjoying the fitness journey. You have to enjoy the process!

  5. Record Your Achievements Keep track of personal records - the heaviest weights, longest planks, or most reps in a minute. Documenting what you're proud of can fuel motivation.

  6. Track Progress Visually Take progress photos regularly and note changes. It doesn't matter if the improvements seems slow, slow progress is still progress. You can also measure and weigh yourself periodically.

  7. Support System Friends can be a great support system. Whether it's having gym buddies or friends joining your workout sessions, a support network keeps motivation high and helps you to stay on track.
