Salt, or sodium, is an essential electrolyte that plays a crucial role in sports performance and overall health.

Back in 2012 I competed in the World's Toughest Mudder (24 hour assault course). A few hours into the race, both of my calf muscles cramped. It was agonising. The medic handed me a sachet of salt and told me to place it on my tongue. Minutes later, I was ready to continue the race. Since then I have gotten to know sodium and have been best friends ever since.

For years, I have struggled to get across to people the benefits of salt and why it shouldn't be avoided. So here's the science...

First off, sodium helps maintain proper fluid balance in the body, aiding in hydration. Athletes often lose significant amounts of sodium through sweat during intense workouts, and adequate sodium intake helps prevent dehydration, ensuring optimal physiological function.

Secondly, sodium is essential for nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction. This is particularly important for athletes engaging in activities that demand quick reflexes and coordination. Maintaining an appropriate sodium balance contributes to efficient communication between nerves and muscles, ultimately enhancing athletic performance.

Sodium also helps regulate blood pressure, ensuring that athletes maintain cardiovascular health. Proper blood pressure is essential for delivering oxygen and nutrients to working muscles. By supporting cardiovascular function, sodium contributes to endurance and overall stamina during prolonged physical activities.

Additionally, sodium plays a role in nutrient absorption in the small intestine. This is vital for athletes who need efficient absorption of nutrients like carbohydrates and electrolytes to fuel their workouts and aid recovery. Proper nutrient absorption contributes to sustained energy levels and optimal recovery after exercise.

Conclusion

In summary, sodium is a key player in maintaining hydration, supporting nerve and muscle function, regulating blood pressure, and facilitating nutrient absorption. For athletes, incorporating an appropriate amount of sodium into their diet is fundamental for maximising performance and overall well being.

It's important for athletes to strike a balance in their salt intake, as excessive consumption can have negative health effects. Staying hydrated and consuming electrolyte rich foods and drinks, especially in hot and sweaty conditions, can help optimise sports performance.
