Well, I had to talk about it at some point. The latest groundbreaking wellness trend that's been around forever...
If you’re a gym goer, athlete, or someone who simply uses social media, you’ve most likely seen people post about dunking themselves into barrels of ice and captioning it with something like, “Embrace the discomfort 💪❄️".
Been There, Frozen That
I promise that I'll get around to telling you the benefits, but I need to get this off my chest. Ice baths are about as new as fire, and they don't need a WIFI connection to work.
While ice baths are very beneficial, I find hilarious (and really annoying) how they’ve been repackaged as the new wellness secret. Humans have been plunging into cold water for thousands of years, long before Instagram. The ancient Greeks, known for their sculpted bodies were big fans of cold water therapy to recover from workouts. Even earlier, people in Nordic cultures were plunging into icy lakes post-sauna for health benefits, and for them, winter temperatures were -20°C anyway.
So, the next time someone says that ice baths are revolutionary, I'd believe them...if we were living in 500 B.C.
The Health Benefits
Now, to give credit, ice baths actually are pretty great. Here’s what freezing yourself can do:
Faster Muscle Recovery
Intense workouts can leave your muscles sore and fatigued. The cold water in an ice bath reduces inflammation by constricting blood vessels, which helps flush out waste products like lactic acid. This means you’ll bounce back quicker and be ready for your next workout sooner.
Reduces Swelling and Inflammation
Ice baths can help reduce swelling caused minor injuries. Whether you’re recovering from a sore ankle or just finished a long run, the cold water works like an anti-inflammatory.
Boosts Circulation
When you step out of an ice bath, your blood vessels dilate, promoting better blood flow. This improved circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, speeding up the healing process.
Improves Mental Toughness
Sitting in freezing water isn’t easy. But enduring the discomfort can train your brain to stay calm under stress. Regular ice baths can help build resilience and boost your ability to handle challenges, not just in fitness, but in life.
Enhances Mood and Focus
Cold exposure triggers the release of endorphins and increases dopamine levels in your brain. This can leave you feeling energised, happy, and more focused. If you’re looking for a natural early morning mood booster, this might be it.
Better Sleep
Cold exposure can help regulate your nervous system, which may lead to deeper, more restful sleep. An ice bath after an evening workout can signal your body to relax and recover..
Supports Immune Health Regular cold exposure may stimulate your immune system by increasing white blood cell production. While it doesn't cure everything, ice baths could give your body an extra edge in staying healthy.
Don't Over-Spend
I don't know about you but I've seen Ice baths being sold for over £5,000. These are the ones that have the Bluetooth temperature controls, the 3 step stair case, the wooden decal and the fancy brand name. Truth is, you don't need high-tech gadgets to sit in cold water. There are many cheaper brands that sell them for £60.
So, are ice baths worth the hype? Many people swear by them, and the benefits are pretty cool. I think you should give it a shot. It could turn out to be your new favourite recovery tool!
