What Supplements I Take and Why

Updated: Dec 18, 2024

Here's a list of the supplements that I take every day and the reasons as to why.

Morning Supplements

  1. Omega 3

Omega 3 is a powerhouse for brain health, heart health, and overall inflammation reduction. It's fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are essential for keeping your mind sharp and your heart pumping strong. Plus, they help with your mood, making mornings a little brighter.

  2. Iodine

Iodine is all about optimising your thyroid health and brain function. The thyroid gland uses iodine to produce hormones, which not only support your thyroid, but also boost your brainpower, metabolism, immune system, digestion, and concentration throughout the day.

Iodised table salt is great and can be found at most supermarkets. Cranberry juice (not from concentrate) is also a great source but it would need to be bought online. Although I use the salt now and then, I make sure I take a tablet daily.

  3. Vitamin D3

Living in the UK means that we don't always have sunshine, and therefore have higher risk of Vitamin D deficiency. This vitamin is crucial for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. It works together with calcium to keep your bones and immune system strong. I take 6,000 IU Vitamin D3 tablets.

  4. Vitamin K2

Why take Vitamin K2 in the morning? It helps with the proper absorption of calcium, ensuring it goes to the right places in the body (like bones and teeth) and not the wrong ones (like arteries). It also sets the stage for my Vitamin E intake in the evening, as these vitamins work well together to support overall health.

Evening Supplements

  1. Magnesium Bisglycinate

After a long day, I turn to Magnesium bisglycinate. This form of magnesium is gentle on the stomach and highly absorbent. It helps relax muscles and mind, making it easier to wind down and prepare for a restful night's sleep. It also supports numerous bodily functions, from nerve function to muscle recovery.

  2. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a great antioxidant that protects cells from damage and supports immune function. I take it in the evening as it also improves sleep quality due to it being an antioxidant, and can reduce night sweats. It's often used as an alternative treatment for chronic insomnia.

  3. Melatonin

Now and then, I take Melatonin. This is a hormone that regulates the sleep and wake cycles, helping me fall asleep faster and enjoy a deeper, more restful sleep. It's a natural way to signal your body that it's time to wind down and get some quality rest. It's naturally produced in the evening but I take it on the nights that I need an extra boost. This is not to be taken too late at night as it can disrupt your regular circadian rhythm.

Other Supplement

Whey Protein

Sometimes, life gets busy, and I might miss a meal or feel a bit hungry between the meals. That's where a protein shake comes in handy for me. It's a quick and convenient way to get a protein boost, keeping my energy levels stable and helping me avoid reaching for unhealthy snacks. Also, it's obviously great for muscle repair and growth, especially.

Why These Supps Suit Me

Each of these supplements serves a specific purpose, and they help me maintain optimal health, energy, and wellbeing. From supporting brain function and heart health in the morning to ensuring a restful sleep at night, this routine covers all my bases.

Blood Test

Everyone's needs are different, so it's essential to tailor your vitamin/supplement routine to your unique health goals and lifestyle.

I've partnered with an excellent team of doctors and professionals nurses from 'One Day Tests'. They offer numerous blood tests, whether it be a home kit, walk-in clinic, or even a specialist home visit. These tests are then taken to the lab, and the results will be given to you within 24 hours. I have a blood test every 3-6 months to check how I am doing, and I'd recommend you trying it before making purchases of random supplements.
